Is Nature Bathing the right fit for me?

Would you like to take a break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life?

autumn-campus-girls-14Do you like the idea of meditation and mindfulness but don’t fancy sitting still, or feel like you need a bit of guidance?

Would you like to enjoy Colchester’s various nature areas and really appreciate the bird song, gentle breeze, crunchy leaves, scented flowers and other elements of nature?

Nature Bathing is for you

Forest bathing, or shinrin-yoku, in which you visit a forest for relaxation and recreation, is a popular approach to stress-management in Japan. In 1982 the Forest Agency of Japan proposed incorporating regular forest bathing trips into a healthy lifestyle, and since then it’s become a well-recognised relaxation activity and/or ‘green therapy’ for adults and children alike. The same approach can be applied to any area of greenery, nature or general outdoorsiness!

Join me for a walk through one of Colchester’s woodlands, meadows, beaches or other areas of natural beauty as I encourage mindful appreciation of our surroundings and help you to switch off from the frenzy of everyday life and enjoy the peace and tranquillity.

I’ve loved the natural world since a young age, spending hours in the garden as a child busily “cooking” interesting “stews” using bits of wood as “chicken”, foliage as “cabbage” and various scavenged bits of plants as “beans” and “herbs”… (I’m pleased to report my cooking has now progressed into the edible arena!)

I’ve also long been interested in meditation, mindfulness and anything that gets me out of my head and into a green space, so when a friend suggested that I try my hand at nature bathing in early 2017, I was all ears! I organised my first group outing: a tranquil walk through Colchester’s Highwoods Country Park during which we made a point of being mindful of all the sights, sounds, smells and other wonders going on around us. The outing and the group were a success, and so Nature Bathing with The Wright Fit soon became my second Meetup group.

Start where you are

myles-tan-91630Everyone is welcome, whether you’re a seasoned practitioner of mindfulness or you’ve never heard of it before. The walk is by its very nature slow and ponderous, so you won’t need to be super fit or kitted out in hiking gear!

Slip on some comfy shoes and layered clothes (in case you get hot or cold and need to adjust), leave your phone at home and come and enjoy the scenery.

Nature is the best stress-relief!

Spending time in nature can boost your mood as well as your general health, giving you much-needed mental ‘breathing space’ which can sometimes lead to breakthroughs and revelations you might never have had while staring at a computer screen for another hour!

Fresh air, vitamin D from the sun and a spot of light exercise combine with the brain-buzz of trying something new, meeting likeminded people and dedicating some time to yourself and your wellbeing to create a real feeling of wellness and relaxation. You deserve it!

Come and give it a try
